About Us

Our Mission

The Aboite Softball League (ASL) is a non-affiliated, parent-run, recreational, non-profit girls’ slow-pitch softball league. The Aboite River Women’s Club started the League in 1976.

The four goals of the League are to teach the principles of softball, teamwork, and sportsmanship while having fun. Everyone bats, and there is free substitution on the playing field. Our rules require all players to bat in order, require rotation between positions and infield/outfield, and are designed to ensure every player gets equal playing time.

Approximately twenty volunteers on the board of directors meet monthly from December through April. The directors are parents of players and former players. The board has a variety of positions, the most visible being the president and each divisional vice president. All members serve on a one-year term with the request to the divisional vice presidents to commit to a two-year term.

The league is divided into five divisions: Tee ball for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first graders; 2-3 division for second and third graders; 4-5 division for fourth and fifth graders; middle school division for sixth, seventh and eighth graders; and high school for ninth through twelfth graders.

USSSA rules form the basis of the rules, but are modified for each division to accommodate the League philosophy and playing ability. The League uses the three-ball diamonds behind the former Woodside Middle School, now Homestead Freshmen Academy. Two of the diamonds are lighted, and all three have electronic scoreboards. The bases are 60 feet apart. Pitching distances vary by division from 25 feet to 42 feet. All diamonds have dugouts and storage sheds. The largest diamond has a home-run fence approximately 200 feet from home plate.

The League has an annual operating budget of about $50,000. Sponsor fees for each team are $300. Each player pays a registration fee consisting of $45/t-ball and $85 for all other divisions. No player has ever been denied participation in the League for any reason, including inability to pay the registration fee. The Aboite Township Park District and Southwest Allen County Schools have been instrumental in helping to maintain and improve our playing facilities, which has allowed the League to keep players’ fees to a minimum.
